Earn Cash as a Content Creator for Newsbreak

After sharing about blog syndication to increase blog traffic, I started getting questions about other ways to syndicate blog content. Because this is new territory for me, I'm learning as I go!

The next post in this series is about Medium. But for now, we are talking about NewsBreak! 🙂

Becoming a content creator for NewsBreak means you can repurpose your existing blog content or write about different topics you're passionate about. I recommend using NewsBreak to grow your brand – so stay on topic as much as possible with what you publish if that is how you're using it.

Or, you can use it to grow your freelance portfolio. Social proof (in the form of traffic, follows, and shares) can help your clients see how valuable your writing talent is, which means you can raise your rates!

Note: Affiliate links may be used in this post. I earn a commission when you make a purchase through them. 🙂 Click to learn how to increase your affiliate earnings on your own blog.

What is the Newsbreak app?

Newsbreak is a content syndication platform, similar to Medium and Microsoft Start. However, Microsoft currently has a waitlist 10 miles long.

Newsbreak is the #1 local news app in the Google Play Store. The keyword here is local. Newsbreak is passionate about reinvigorating community and independent journalism. The platform brings together writers from a variety of niches, including reporters, bloggers, and influencers.

If you are a writer or content creator, Newsbreak is a unique platform to monetize your skills and knowledge. From lifestyle pieces to breaking news updates, there are endless opportunities available.

You write what you want (within their editorial guidelines) and Newsbreak does the publishing.

Who should Write for Newsbreak?

Getting started with Newsbreak is relatively simple as long as you meet their criteria.

Once you're approved as a Newsbreak writer, you are able to submit articles on nearly any topic (except adult content).

Your articles will be reviewed by the Newsbreak editorial team before they go live on the platform. If they meet Newsbreak's quality standards, and you are eligible for monetization, you'll earn a share of the revenue generated through advertising or subscriptions.

The focus is the local scene, so anyone passionate about their community can build a following on Newsbreak. You can also focus more on a niche, like a few of my VIP clients have done, with lifestyle stories, personal finance, or education.

Regardless of experience level, anyone who loves writing and wants to join a community of content creators should take a look at NewsBreak.

criteria to be a newsbreak contributor

Along with having a passion for writing, contributors need to create an account on NewsBreak, complete a profile section, and start writing.

The editorial team will review your writing before it gets published. Be patient as this can take several days.

Your articles will be marked as rejected, under review, or accepted. Once the team approves your writing, you can start publishing even more articles.

Important: NewsBreak has significantly changed its payment structure and policies in the last couple of years. Keep reading to get the most accurate information.

How to Get Started?

Getting started with Newsbreak is a straightforward process. It took me about 10 minutes to go through all the steps. The longest part is waiting for the editorial team's approval, which can take several days.

Once you've registered, you'll have access to their wide range of tools and resources designed to help content creators get started.

If you initially get rejected, don't worry, you can try again later.

Create an account

To create an account, enter your email and password. Click the button in your confirmation email to complete your profile.

In the main dashboard, several questions will appear. If they have an asterisk (*), they are required. These are simple questions such as confirming your email and phone number, social media accounts, referral source, and website.

On the next screen, it asks for your profile name, tagline, description, and picture. These are all publicly displayed in the author bio section next to your articles, so choose your words and photo carefully.

I recommend choosing a name, tagline, and description relevant to the content you will be writing about.

Best Practices as a newsbreak contributor

Once your profile is created, there are three sections to help you understand Newsbreak's desired content, best practices for contributors, and how to get the most out of your profile.

There are several articles in the Newsbreak knowledge library to answer any further questions about using your dashboard or meeting the content requirements.

In general, focus on consistently creating relevant and valuable content. Monetization is not an option until you have 10 articles published.

I recommend setting a goal for yourself to get those first articles published as quickly as possible. Most likely, you will need to write more than 10 articles before you get 10 actually published.

Take any feedback you get with rejected articles, and make adjustments and revisions accordingly.

Another best practice for making money writing on Newsbreak is to use your dashboard and insights. This information explains which articles are the most viewed and most popular.

Do you notice any trends or clusters of articles doing better than others? If so, write more about those topics.

How Does Newsbreak Make Me Money?

Signing up as a Newsbreak content creator is free, but in order to monetize your Newsbreak content, you must post at least 10 articles and gain a minimum of 100 “verified” followers.

Verified followers mean these are people who have created accounts, not just anyone who reads the article. When you post relevant and valuable content, you should be able to get 100 followers within a few weeks.

Unfortunately, your account is not automatically monetized – you have to complete an application once you have 100 followers and 10 published posts. Patience is a virtue as this process may take 2-3 weeks.

Newsbreak pays contributors a portion of their ad revenues. Payments are distributed once a month for the previous month's earnings.

Content Campaigns

Another way to make a chunk of cash at one time with Newsbreak is through their content campaigns. There are specific rules for each contest and the editorial team selects the winner. These bonuses are anywhere from $100-150. Several of my VIPs get these bonuses every month.

Generally, the rules include being an approved content creator, writing an article about a specific topic for your location, and tagging the article.

Examples of previous content campaigns include a local giving back article, winter wonderland, or summer fun. These entries must be new content.

What Type of Content is Best for Newsbreak?

Newsbreak's main focus is local news, stories, and hidden gems. However, you can write about a myriad of topics. Keep your writing factual, informative, and relevant. Avoid inflammatory or spammy rhetoric.

If you clearly label it as such, satire and fiction are allowed. However, this faces a higher degree of scrutiny from the editorial team, and may not get published.

Focus on providing content that people will truly want to read because your payouts are determined by how well your content does.

Newsbreak content requirements

Articles must be a minimum of 250 words and contain one image. Avoid using clickbait in your headlines. Formatting should be clean and free of distractions. The old adage “keep it simple” certainly applies here.

Can I Repurpose My Blog Posts?

Yes, you can repurpose your blog posts on Newsbreak. There is no way to automate this process so you will need to copy/paste your content into the Newsbreak editor. If you repurpose articles, you are not supposed to include:

  • affiliate links
  • Calls to action
  • Links back to your blog
  • Use Read More buttons

Like any platform, Newsbreak wants readers to stay on Newsbreak. Write content that will keep them there. If they like your content and writing style, readers will see your website link in the author bio and can follow the trail.

Think people won't read your content? I have VIPs who have articles on NewsBreak with 500K+ views on decluttering! And, look at this one, a month after being published:

How to grow your newsbreak following

Whether it be on social media or a website, the best way to grow your following is to overdeliver in value. Give your readers exactly what they need and then some. Build rapport and trust with your audience on a consistent basis.

You are not getting rich overnight with Newsbreak. Like all good things in life, it is going to take some work. If you already have a blog though, half the work is already done. Use your Newsbreak contributions as an almost-passive stream of income by republishing your blog content.

If you're a multi-passionate person with a million ideas bouncing around in your brain, Newsbreak is a great writing outlet without having to create a completely new niche site for each idea.

Every writer should be using multiple platforms to build several streams of income. Being a Newsbreak contributor can be one avenue of monetization for you. Let me know if you get started on Newsbreak and post your results in my Passive Income Pathways Facebook group. I'd love to hear how it goes for you.

Sadly, Canada doesn’t allow us to have newsbreak. We also are not accepted to write.
