How to Change Etsy Shop Name in 5 Minutes or Less
Your Etsy shop name represents your brand, and it's an important part of your business. Think about your shop name and the keywords you would like to include before you officially change it.
Are you an Etsy shop owner looking to rebrand and attract more customers? Changing your shop name on Etsy can be a game-changer for your business, but it's important to do it effectively.
Rebranding is a powerful way to breathe new life into your business and position yourself for growth. But the thing is, it's not just about changing your shop name; it also involves redefining your brand identity, messaging, and visual elements.
With the right strategies in place, a rebranded Etsy shop can help you stand out from the competition and attract more customers.
Keep in mind who you are serving, or will be serving under your new brand name. Consider the products you will be selling, the niche you will be carving out for yourself to stand out in the crowd.
I've started multiple Etsy shops in the past, only to realize I needed to pivot or rebrand. To do this takes just a few simple steps.

Why rebranding is important for your Etsy shop
Rebranding is a crucial step for any Etsy shop owner looking to grow their business and attract more customers.
Here's why:
Differentiation from competitors: With thousands of shops on Etsy, standing out from the crowd is essential. A rebrand allows you to differentiate yourself from competitors and create a unique identity that captures the attention of even MORE potential customers.
Revitalizing your brand: Over time, your brand may become stagnant or outdated. Rebranding gives you the opportunity to breathe new life into your business, refreshing your brand image and attracting a fresh audience.
Evolution of your business: As your business grows and evolves, your brand identity may need to adapt as well. Rebranding allows you to align your brand with your current business goals and target market.
Before jumping into the rebranding process, there are a few important steps to consider to ensure a successful transition.
How to choose the perfect Etsy shop name
With your niche audience in mind, come up with a shop name that is:
- memorable
- easy to say
- easy to spell
- evergreen (won't be outdated next year)
- doesn't break Etsy's rules
- is something you can stick with
Whether you use your actual name as your brand or you choose something else, the name you choose represents YOU.
Can I rename my Etsy shop?
Yes, you can rename your Etsy shop! When you change your shop's name, be sure to keep it on the up and up: change your banner, send out email and social media announcements, and update all of your mockups to reflect your new shop name.
Adding your name change into your shop announcement is a good idea, too, so your customers know you are still YOU.
Remember, you cannot change your name BACK to your old shop name once it is changed! Be sure you are ready for the change.
How do I change my shop name on Etsy in 2024?
Log into your Etsy account. Go to “Settings” then “Info and Appearance” on the left hand side of your dashboard.
Click on “Change” and put your new shop name in the box. Then, click “Save.”
What happens when you change your shop name?
All links to your shop continue to work, and no one can use your previous shop name.
Your shop will have a new URL. Links to your previous shop URLs will redirect to your new shop URLs. We use 301 redirects to help maintain your search engine rankings after the change.
We let people know you changed your shop name.
For 45 days, this icon will appear next to your shop name on shop pages, your profile, and shop search results to let people know you recently changed your shop name. People who purchased from your shop under the previous name will always see your previous and current shop name on their receipts and transaction pages.
If you previously purchased a domain forwarder for your shop, update it to reflect the new URL instead of the redirected one.
Communicating the rebrand to your existing customers
When rebranding your Etsy shop, it's crucial to communicate the changes to your existing customers to avoid any confusion.
Here's how to effectively communicate your rebrand:
Announcement in your shop: Create an announcement in your shop that explains the changes you've made and the reasons behind the rebrand. Thank your customers for their support and assure them that the quality of your products remains the same.
Email newsletter: Send out an email newsletter to your existing customers, informing them about the rebrand and any changes they need to be aware of. Highlight the benefits of the rebrand and offer a special discount or promotion as a gesture of appreciation.
Social media updates: Utilize your social media platforms to announce and promote your rebrand. Share engaging content that showcases your new brand identity and encourages your followers to visit your updated Etsy shop.
By effectively communicating your rebrand, you can maintain the loyalty of your existing customers while also attracting new ones.
Can you change your Etsy shop name more than once?
I have personal experience with this one, because I can never make up my mind! I have changed my shop name multiple times over the years, but it is up to Etsy's discretion if they let you change it more than five times.
From Etsy:
Once your shop is open, you can change your shop name up to five times. If you need to change it again, use the same form to submit a name change request to Etsy Support. Etsy Support will then review the request.
If you've already changed your shop name multiple times, be careful when choosing a new name – it might be one you're stuck with forever! On the off chance that Etsy denies your name change request and you have to open a new shop, you will lose all of your ratings, reviews, and rankings.
Does your Etsy shop name have to match your business name?
While your Etsy shop name doesn't have to match your business name, it's a good idea to make them the same. For branding purposes, recognition, and word of mouth, making sure everything matches is key.
If someone is sharing your shop and they say your shop is “Fluffle Butt Designs” but your shop name/URL says “designsbyfluffle” how are they going to find you? Obviously you can put your name in your shop's tags, listings, etc – but my point is, keeping it as simple and matchy-matchy as possible is best.
Can two Etsy shops have the same name?
Two Etsy shops cannot have the same name. Technically, the DISPLAY name could be the same, but the shop name could not. The shop name determines your URL and that would not work!
Should I have two Etsy shops? Can I?
You can have two Etsy shops, and you should if you are serving separate niches or niche audiences. I talk about how to find an Etsy niche in this post and the rules for having two Etsy shops here.
How long can an Etsy store name be?
Your Etsy shop name can be up to 20 characters long. That doesn't mean you have to make it that long. In fact, the shorter and easier to spell, the better. 😉
Your store name cannot have punctuation or spacing, but can have numbers and letters.
Should I change my Etsy shop name?
Just because you can change your Etsy shop name doesn't mean you should. What is your reason for the change, is it a whim or are you truly wanting to rebrand?
Don't overthink it, but don't change your shop name until you know that is the brand you want to move forward with!
